Berlin, September 24: : The United States is not about to slip into recession and neither is the broader world economy, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said in a newspaper interview on Wednesday.
"As things look now, neither the US economy nor the global economy will slip into recession," Strauss-Kahn told Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "But we are facing a protracted economic downturn, and the recovery that we are expecting in the course of next year will be sluggish," he said.
Last week, a G10 source said that the IMF had raised its forecast for US economic growth this year while cutting its outlook for the euro zone.
The IMF now sees US growth of 1.7 per cent in 2008, up from a 1.3 per cent projection in July, and sees euro zone growth at 1.4 per cent, down from 1.7 per cent, the official said.
