New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department forecast near normal monsoon this year, a news that is expected to bring cheer to the large farming community across the country.

The monsoon rains this season would be 96 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA), the weather office said in a statement. The weather scientists said they had kept a model error of 5 per cent.

Every year the weather office holds a press conference to announce the long range monsoon forecast. But the Election Commission had denied them permission this year in view of the on-going Lok Sabha polls.
