Kolkata: Idea Cellular, the seventh GSM player to enter the West Bengal circle, on Tuesday announced it will invest Rs 1,200 crore over the next three years to provide services to Kolkata, rest of Bengal and Sikkim.
Coming on the heels of Tata Docomo’s launch earlier this month, Idea said it has licences for all 22 circles, with West Bengal being the 20 th and Assam and northeast set to launch in the next two weeks.
Till September 2009, Idea had 51 million subscribers, of the total 335.5 million in the country.
The network will cover eight districts now and will expand to 22 districts of the state and Sikkim by the year-end. The network is edge-enabled and 3G ready, so the customer can switch to 3G with the same network.
“Our growth rate will be in single digit till the end of the fiscal as we have just entered the circle. We have 3 lakh subscribers in Orissa where we launched in April 2009 and 2 million in the Bihar and Jharkhand circle, which was launched in October last year,” said Ambrish Jain director, operations.
The company is investing Rs 1200-Rs 1500 crore in the eastern region in the currect fiscal.
It’s offering both minute and second-based plans to its customers.
Jain said the tariff war, with the per-second billing trend, is not going to sustain for long.
