New Delhi, Apr 3 : Spurred by a huge demand from the industry, especially from the IT-enabled services, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has decided to launch a 15-month “accounting technician” course from April 22. Students can register just after 10th boards to become an accounting technician and they would be required to take an eligibility test after appearing for 12th examinations. ICAI would also offer a stream integrating accounting technician course with its CA course.

The fee structure will be in line with other fees charged by the institute and surely “below Rs 10,000”, ICAI president Ved Jain said. The institute targets to give admission to one lakh students yearly and produce 50,000 accounting technicians every year. The course would comprise papers including in accounting, law, cost accounting and financial management, taxation, general commercial knowledge and business communication.

“BPOs, KPOs and a large number of small enterprises whose accounting needs are limited, also need such accounting technicians. The need for such professionals is expected to go further with increased integration of agriculture and informal sector with the mainstream on economy and reforms,” he said. A similar course has recently been started in countries like New Zealand, Ireland, Hong Kong and Britain.

Meanwhile, the institute has been allotted a 25-acre land near Jaipur international airport by the Rajasthan government to build ICAI campus. ICAI is planning to build its campus where it will offer its “three months residential programme for CA students on professional and skill development”, to be started by the institute soon.
