IBM To Buy Maersk Data

IBM agreed to buy Maersk Data, the computer services unitof AP Moeller-Maersk, and DM Data, which is 45 per cent owned by Maersk Data, adding 3,700 employees, IBM spokeswoman Gillian Kenny said.

Armonk, New York-based IBM, also the world’s biggest computer maker, in May outlined a strategy for increasing sales of consulting services as demand for software cools. The services unit is now IBM’s biggest and fast growing division.

‘‘The purchase will increase IBM’s capabilities inserving clients in the transportation and logistics industry globally,’’ Mr Kenny said.

According to industry sources, Maersk Data has ‘‘deep shipping industry insight.’’

Services last year accounted for about half IBM’s sales. The biggest portion of that came from services such as running other companies’ computer networks.
