New Delhi: : Even as Delhi Metro Rail Corporat-ion approach-es completion of the first leg of its construction work, a portion of the credit for the success in sticking to deadlines can be attributed to the project management software that has been silently keeping all efforts and activity in place.
Says Mr Mukesh Arora, executive director, KLG Systel Ltd, that has provided DMRC with the project management software,‘‘Project management is essentially knowledge management. Typically, 60 per cent of basic groundwork activities are duplicated in each project. With shorter time cycles expected these days, there is tremendous pressure on designers, engineers and project heads to deliver faster. This is where project management acts as a means of empowering project managers to control projects better and integrate with the backend.’’ KLG Systel has since the inception of the Metro Rail project in 1999 been providing complete project management solutions covering aspects of time, resource and cost planning.
Given the size of the project—Rs 8000 crore, covering a stretch of 198.5 km, there were multiple parties involved. In order to maintain constant interaction with the vendors, KLG provided them with a project planning and monitoring software Primavera Project PLanner 3.0, a product of Primavera of US, of which KGL is a technical and marketing partner in India. The software provides a dashboard of all activities taking place parallelly. It empowers the decision-makers with real time information on aspects as varied as the amount of work completed at different levels, the time lost or gained. It provides knowledge of all critical and upcoming activity, making it possible to keep track and reschedule activities.
The software was customised to suit the specific needs of DMRC. Primavera Project Planner 3.0 works on three parametres: time, resource and cost planning. In the time planning module, the software informs the user about the pace at which the work is progressing, and whether the present pace could cause an extension in completion time. The resource planning module alerts the user when there is overloading of resources and the cost planning module provides complete cost break-up. The software thus helps vendors determine which parametres are not being met and can accordingly rework their schedules. This also ensures that original targets are met and no losses incurred as even a day’s loss would translate into huge losses in projects of this size.
KLG has also provided training and consultancy to DMRC on the best utilisation of the software...
