Hosts St Kabir needed to win and that too by atleast two goals to keep semi-final hopes alive in the St Kabir Trophy football tournament played on Monday. Pitted against them were Strawberry Field World School who needed only a draw to move ahead. The match between the two resulted in an exhilarating contest that was perhaps the most awaited by the crowd. Arjit and Manan took the responsibility on their shoulders and scored a goal each to help the hosts beat Strawberry Field, 2-0, and sneak through into the last four stage.
Arjit opened the account for the hosts in the ninth minute. Desperate for the victory, the hosts pushed forward and got the decisive goal in the 20th minute through Manan. They held on to the slender lead and managed to win. Meanwhile, St Xavier's prevailed over St John's School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, 2-1, in a closely fought encounter. Saupin's School, Chandigarh humbled Aashiana School, 2-0, to book a berth in the semis. St Stephen's completed the semi-final line-up by trouncing St Joseph's School, 4-1, in a lop-sided quarter-final match.
Meanwhile, in the St Kabir Basketball Trophy for Under-14 girls, St Kabir outplayed New Public School, 24-11, to qualify for the league stage. Strawberry Field registered a comprehensive 12-5 victory over St Xavier's to also move ahead, while St Joseph humbled GMSSS-20 by 49-21. In the Under-16 boy's category, Little Flower, Panchkula defeated St Soldier's School, 32-21, and St Kabir routed Strawberry School, 20-8, in a lop-sided encounter.
