A 33-year-old history-sheeter and his aide have been arrested for allegedly trying to steal from two ATMs in three days. Bairaraju alias Rajesh alias Raju of Aralimarada Doddi village in Kanakapura taluk allegedly entered a UCO Bank ATM at East Point College in Avalahalli near Hoskote wearing a helmet on November 26. On November 29, he broke open the shutter of an HDFC Bank ATM at Kothanur, this time covering his face with a monkey cap. The police said Raju, however, failed to break open the cash box on both occasions. CCTVs at the ATMs recorded both attempts.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar said said the UCO Bank ATM robbery attempt came to light after a special Kothanur police team formed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-east) T R Suresh arrested the accused and his aide V Babu, 24, a cab driver.

The police said Raju had a history of crimes. Employed at a restaurant in Kalasipalya, he and two aides had allegedly tried to kill security guard Manjunath in 2003. Raju was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, only to be acquitted by the High Court six-and-a-half years later.
