Similar to the high-power locomotives used in the US and European countries, Indian Railways too is just a few steps short of inducting indigenously built multi-genset, high-power engines.
These new multi-genset locomotives are expected
to not only reduce the fuel consumption of the railways by 20% but will also cut down its carbon footprint considerably, railway officials said.
Currently, the railways is conducting the trial run of these high-powered locomotives in Itarsi in central India. The new engines will have a combined horse power of 2,400.
At present, there are over 500 multi-genset locomotives in the US in the medium-power range and Bombardier has an order or manufacturing 200 multi-genset locomotives for the German state railways.
Experts said multi-genset locomotives employ two or more small engines as compared to a single large engine in conventional locomotives. Multiple small engines work only when there is demand for greater power.
