Bombay High Court dismissed on Friday a plea by Congress corporator Amit Patil against his disqualification from contesting mayoral election in Navi Mumbai.

The court also directed criminal action against him for “making false statements in an affidavit” and “relying on a document allegedly fabricated” and imposed an “exemplary cost” of Rs 15,000.

Patil had challenged a November 9 order of a returning officer turning down his nomination for not attaching caste and caste validity certificates. The corporator from a ward reserved for OBCs claimed his nomination was rejected to protect the interest of mayor Sagar Naik.

Patil said in an affidavit minutes of a meeting recorded during scrutiny of nominations indicated he had attached necessary documents.
