Philanthropist Rajashree Birla has announced a gift of $1 million to Rotary in support of the international humanitarian groupís polio eradication programme, increasing her total contributions to Rotaryís anti-polio effort to more than $7.2 million.
The third annual breast gynaec-oncology meet was held at Ruby Hall Clinic on September 21 and 22, to create awareness among women and also included live operative workshops
Bone of contention
The Russian Ilizarov centre for trauma and
orthopaedics, Adke hospital at Solapur, will conduct a national conference from September 27 to 29 at Goa. Around 470 orthopaedic doctors will participate, Dr Sandeep Adke, the organising secretary said. Dr Amit Bhattacharjee who trained Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra will speak on Ilizarov and sports injuries at the conference
Spine care camp
A spine care camp will be organised by Sahyadri Hospital, Hadapsar, on September 27 and 28. Open from 10 am to 2 pm on both days, the camp will offer free consultation from leading neurosurgeons.
September 21 is globally observed as World Alzheimer's Day. Marking September as the World Alzheimer month, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital initiated an awareness drive to educate people about Alzheimer disease and dementia. Statistics suggest that one in 20 people over the age of 60 years suffer from Alzheimerís in India. Currently, there are over 3.7 million people in India affected by the disease and this is expected to double by 2030.
New horizons in medicine
A two-day national conference in internal medicine was held at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, on September 21. The theme of the conference was Emerging Therapies in Medicine. The keynote address was delivered by M V Padma Srivastava, a professor from AIIMS, Delhi, on emerging therapies in ischemic stroke.
