On Eid, the Gurgaon administration arranged an alternative venue — at Tau Devi Lal Park — for thousands of Muslims who used offered namaz at a disputed 2.5-acre plot in Palam Vihar.

The alternative venue was arranged after prohibitory orders were imposed within a 3-km radius around the plot, caught in a dispute between Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the Haryana Wakf Board.

A Hindu group — Hindu Samaj Sangarsh Samiti — had earlier threatened that it will not allow namaz to be offered at the site, but later withdrew its statement after prohibitory orders were imposed.

Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi said: “A Muslim delegation had made an official request to the sub-divisional magistrate that an alternative venue be provided to hold prayers on Eid. So we made arrangements at Tau Devi Lal Park in Gurgaon. Thousands of Muslims offered their prayers in the morning on Friday and the day went peacefully. The administration also arranged water tankers and prayer mats at the park.”

SP Singh, DCP (West), said: “After tensions rose over the ownership of the land in Palam Vihar, we increased police presence in the area on Wednesday. There has been no untoward incident here.”
