Gujarat's Ashapura set to enter Orissa mineral sector

Bhubaneswar: Ashapura Minechem Ltd, country's largest multi-mineral solution provider, is entering Orissa with a beach sand complex project near Puri. The Rs 910-crore mineral separation plant will separate minerals from beach sand and will produce titanium dioxide, which is widely used in paints.

The project of Ashapura Minechem, the flagship company of Gujarat-based Ashapura Group, has been cleared by Orissa government's Single Window Clearance Authority (SWCA).

A memorandum of understanding will be signed soon after the project is cleared by the high-power project clearance committee headed by chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

State industries secretary Ashok Dalwai said the project will generate employment opportunity for about 300 people.

Meanwhile, Dalwai said Jaiswal Nicco Industries' proposal for setting up a 1.2 million tonne iron ore beneficiation and pelletisation plant at Harmote near Barbil in the Keonjhar district has also been cleared by the SWCA. Jaiswal Nicco plans to invest Rs 452 crore and the proposed project would generate employment for 500.

The SWCA, which met under the chairmanship of chief secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy here on Wednesday, also cleared the proposal of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd to enhance the capacity of its steel project from 2 million tonne to 6m tonne. The steel production of the plant will be 3m tonne through DRI (sponge iron) route and another 3m tonne through blast furnace route. Jindal has also proposed to increase the capacity of its thermal power plant from 900mw to 1080mw. The expansion will increase investment from Rs 13,135 crore to Rs 22,440 crore.
