Will NTPC be able to meet its generation target of 244 billion units in the new financial year given the trend of weak demand for power from the economic slowdown? The power generator has done well on the capacity addition front in recent years. However, its plants have suffered generation losses as discoms have lifted less electricity, than requisitioned, from its stations.
Despite the odds, NTPC chairman Arup Roy Choudhury is unlikely to reconcile himself to the idea of missing the target, which could land the Navratna PSU in the ranks of ‘below excellent’ performers. But the moot question is, if Roy Choudhury has any contingency plan in his mind to overcome the odds.
Bhel, which has a poor reputation in on-time delivery of projects, has commissioned 13,452 MW generation capacities in 2013-14, a record for the company. The PSU has also bagged some mega-sized equipment supply contracts in the March quarter after a long lean period. It is a turnaround for the company, indeed. However, it is not clear if the change in fortune is the result of market cycles or the company has impressed its customers with increased efficiency in project implementation?
