While he may be missing from the list of designers showcasing at Wills India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2014, couturier JJ Valaya is going to be busy championing the cause of Indian fashion on foreign shores. The designer has been invited to be the grand finale designer at Kiev Fashion Week in Ukraine. The show will take place on Oct 13 at the Mystetski Arsenal Museum, Kiev. The invitation was extended to him by Sanskriti – Centre for Indian Culture, located in Kiev, which promotes Indian crafts and works in tandem with the Indian embassy. “The organisers at Kiev Fashion Week invite an international designer every year to do the finale show. They’ve had Italian and French designers showcase in the past. This year, they wanted to showcase Indian fashion and craft,” says Valaya.
The collection that will grace the finale ramp will be an extension of Valaya’s “Maharaja of Madrid” line. “It will be quintessential Valaya, a definitive showcase of Indian couture. Very royal, yet modern, so that the international audience can associate with the clothes,” says the designer. Consequently, the colour story will stick to ivory, mettalics, red and black. On offer will be gowns, peplums and dresses along with lehengas with jackets and anarkalis for women and achkans, chogas and breeches for men. After the show, travel enthusiast Valaya hopes to explore the wonders of Ukraine.
