The Republic Day was celebrated across Odisha with gaiety and enthusiasm today with the government announcing Rs 1 per kg rice scheme for the poor and steps to set up fast track courts for offences against women.

Besides people living below poverty line (BPL), Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, disabled and beneficiaries of antyodaya scheme would also get Rs 1 per kg rice from February, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said addressing the celebrations at the historic Barabati stadium at Cuttack.

Currently the government provides Rs 2 per kg rice to the poor.

People living above poverty line in the backward KBK (undivided Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput) districts would also be provided Rs one kg rice under the scheme which would benefit over 58 lakh people, Patnaik said, adding the aim is to ensure a hunger-free Odisha and food security.

Stating that the state government has been making constant efforts to ensure safety and security of women, the Chief Minister said steps have been initiated to set up fast track courts for trying offences against women.

Maintaining that Odisha occupies a special position in the country's map, he said growth rate in the state has increased substantially, literacy rate has gone up and living standard of people in rural areas has improved considerably.
