The state government is set to implement its Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for college teachers, who have completed M Phil or done PhD, with effect from November 1.

Announcing this, Finance Minister Amit Mitra on Tuesday said altogether 20 per cent of 14,000 college teachers (2,800 teachers) will be benefited by the scheme. “This is a bold decision. Despite financial crisis, we took to start the scheme, which will cost the state exchequer Rs 12 crore per annum,” Mitra said.

According to Mitra, 2100 college lecturers who have done M Phil or Phd will be promoted to the post of assistant professor while 700 assistant professors who have completed MPhil or Phd will be promoted as associate professor.

Chairman of the West Bengal Higher Education Council Sugato Marjit said the recruitment process through College Service Commission will also begin soon.
