New Delhi, Aug 8: The government proposes a complete overhaul of the land records and property registration system throughout the country, a senior official in the Prime Ministers’ office told FE. Under the new regime, the stamp paper system will be phased out and a complete land records modernisation scheme will be in place. The initiative forms part of the recommendations made by National Advisory Council (NAC).
In this connection, NAC chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, has sent a draft document to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The draft paper contains a roadmap for the whole process of modernisation of land records and how to tackle the problem of fake stamp paper printing, he said.
NAC has stressed the need for elimination of stamp paper system for registration of properties. In the new system, the registrar’s office may record the details of land and property and the registration fee may be deposited in any nationalised bank or post office directly.
