Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil Wednesday announced that the state government would investigate the allegations of actor Sanjay Dutt being provided alcohol in jail. Patil was responding to allegations made by Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawade who had alleged that Dutt was served alcoholic beverages at the Yerawada Jail in Pune, where he is lodged on charges of his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.
Dutt had surrendered in a TADA court in Mumbai in May this year after the SCís verdict in the case. The court had handed over a sentence of six years in jail in 2007, which was later reduced to six years. The actor has served 18 months of his sentence and is serving the remaining 42 months.
Dutt has already enjoyed a 30-day parole in October and has been granted another monthís leave in December. While his earlier parole was on health grounds, the latter was on the grounds that his wife is unwell. He is yet to leave the jail premises.
Tawade had made this allegation during his speech at the Council where he charged the state government with being lax about security. Patil vociferously denied the allegations and said these would be probed. A senior officer at Yerawada Jail, however, said no inquiry orders had reached them yet. ďThese allegations are untrue and we are ready to face any enquiry,Ē said the officer.
