



New Delhi, Dec 5 : Natural gas producers like Reliance Industries would need the government approval for the formula used to calculate the price of the fuel, petroleum minister Murli Deora said on Tuesday. “Formula on the basis of which gas pricing is done shall be approved by the government,” Deora told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Deora said a committee headed by joint secretary and financial adviser in his ministry, had recommended formulation of transparent guidelines for approving natural gas pricing basis for the purposes of calculating government revenue from gas fields (profit petroleum and royalty).
The committee was constituted after the ministry rejected Mukesh Ambani-run Reliance Industries’ proposal to sell gas from its KG-D6 fields in Bay of Bengal to Anil Ambani’s company saying the price of $2.34 per million British thermal unit (mbtu) was not arrived at arms-length basis.
54 PSUs making losses since last 3 years: Dev
As many as 54 central public sector enterprises (CPSE) are making loss since past three years, the Upper House was informed on Tuesday.
In a written reply, minister of heavy industries and public enterprises, Santosh Mohan Dev, said, “The government had constituted Board for Reconstruction of Public Enterprises (BRPE) in December 2004 to undertake the task of study and analysis of the possibility for strengthening, modernising, reviving and restructuring of loss making CPSEs.”
UNI sale figures in the House
A demand was made in the House for government intervention to stop the sale of majority shares in the United News of India to a private television channel firm. Raising the matter through a special mention, Ali Anwar (JD-U) said the sale of the majority shares in the news agency has led to loss of independence of UNI and freedom of the press.
“It is a matter of concern that while the agency was set up to break the monopoly of news, a private firm was trying to recreate a monopolistic situation in news after 40 years,” he said. All the political parties have also written letters drawing the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the sale of UNI, he said.
Applications of pvt cos pending with govt
As many as 11 applications from private companies seeking permission to operate scheduled domestic air transport services in the country are pending with the government, minister of state for civil aviation Praful Patel informed the RS on Tuesday.
