New Delhi: Retired civil servant Gopi Arora, 76, who wielded enormous clout as special secretary in Rajiv Gandhi’s PMO, passed away here on Thursday. He had been ailing for a while. Cremation will take place on Saturday.
Arora was also among those named in the initial CBI chargesheet in the Bofors kickbacks case, which was recently closed by the investigating agency. He also played an important role in the Rajiv-Longowal accord in Punjab. As special secretary to former PM
Rajiv Gandhi, Arora was as powerful as he was controversial. An IAS officer, Arora was referred to as the force behind Rajiv’s PMO, with his detractors accusing him of wielding powers beyond the scope of a civil servant.
Arora also served as secretary, information and broadcasting ministry and the Union finance secretary.
