A three-day visit to the city following the Vibrant Gujarat summit by a 36-member delegation from 16 countries proved a lesson for them in how to run schemes for economic empowerment of women in various spheres.

An interaction between officials of the Ahmedabad District Panchayat here on Tuesday was followed by a field visit of Paldi Kankaj village in Daskroi taluka in the afternoon.

Led by Dr Rishiraj Singh, Director of Training in the Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation, New Delhi, the delegation is on a two-month training in entrepreneurship and as part of that, it is on a five-day visit to Gujarat for field studies. It was delighted to learn the “bottom to top approach” of economic empowerment of women across social strata as adopted by government agencies and departments, he said.

“These delegates who were earlier looking to countries like Germany and America for the solution to their problems, later realised that India was the place for seeking solution to their developmental issues and now that their numbers are increasing, over three years their number has gone from 100 to around 300 this year,” Singh said.

Fabian M Mwladan, an official from Kenya said the systems in Kenya and India were different and Kenya would learn a lot from India, especially from Gujarat about importance of putting government funding major enterprises that were suffering for lack of finances till now.

“We are impressed by the bottom to top approach of empowerment of women here and will try to replicate it in our country,” he said.

Ahmedabad District Development Officer Banchhanidhi Pani said the importance of inducting the element of economic empowerment of women through self-help groups (SHG) and going beyond banks taking part in income generation schemes.
