For a safe drive home, Nari Cabs at your service from tomorrow

Picture this. It’s about to get dark and you are stranded in one corner of the city, wondering how to get home safe. Down swerves a pink and white cab, driven by a woman chauffeur, offering to take you to your destination.

Sounds like a dream? Not after Nari Cabs is launched on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

An initiative of KK Travels, women will be able to dial for Nari Cabs and have women drivers offering pick and drop facilities.

The company has bought 50 brand new Nissan cars for the service and already hired 50 women drivers. “The drivers are aged between 23 and 48 years,” said Kedar Kasar, director of K K Travels.

The idea came to him and his wife after reading all the “stories of harassment of women” that keep appearing in newspapers. “It is a very serious matter and women feel so insecure. We did an informal survey among friends and HR departments of IT companies and not even a single person shot down the idea of having a taxi service dedicated to women,” said Kasar.

For now, the service will be available only during the day, but the company is hoping to offer round-the-clock services soon.

“We are training our drivers in self-defence techniques. When they are ready, the cabs will ply at night too. The cabs will run in Pune as well as Pimpri-Chinchwad areas,” said Kasar, adding that based on the response they hoped to launch the service in other
