SummaryCentre wants to expand pilot projects in states

In a bid to expand the Aadhaar coverage, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has written to chief ministers of 16 states and union territories asking them to expand the list of districts where pilot projects can be run.

“Aadhaar platform is now ready to support payments under various schemes directly to the beneficiaries’ accounts in the selected areas. The finance minister has asked the chief ministers to further expand the list of districts already chosen for running these pilots,” an official release said.

The government plans to conduct pilot projects for Public Distribution System, LPG, kerosene disbursal, government pension schemes, Janani Suraksha Yojana, government scholarships, financial inclusion, Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) and MGNREGS wage disbursal.

In order to cut down leakages, the government is planning a direct subsidy transfer by making payments into beneficiaries’ accounts through the Aadhaar platform.

Low interest rate to boost economic growth: FinMin

With GDP growth slipping to a nine year low of 6.5 per cent in 2011-12, the finance ministry is hoping that the central bank will cut in key policy rates in its mid-quarter monetary policy review to rev up the economy

“We see a possibility of growth picking up, if interest rates are reasonable,” department of economic affairs secretary R Gopalan said on Thursday adding that the Reserve Bank of India would consider the inflationary situation and external factors while finalising the policy.
