New York: Many a small business in the US and Canada feels that work culture and reputation play a key part in boosting the morale of employees rather than financial benefits, says a survey.

About 36% of the companies surveyed by US-based Human Resources services firm TriNet said that employee’s morale is boosted mainly by the firm’s culture and reputation. “The most commonly-cited contributor to employee morale is the company culture and reputation at 36%. Other major factors include flexibility and work/life balance (23%) and job security (22.3%),” the report said.

Interestingly, the survey revealed that most small business leaders did not believe employee morale was affected by advancement opportunities, benefits, or compensation.About 250 small businesses from America and Canada were surveyed by Trinet. “Small businesses are making concerted efforts to maintain employee morale in turbulent times and they believe the work environment has more impact on employee satisfaction than financial factors like benefits or compensation,” the survey said.

When it comes to the way employees perceive their company, about 60% of respondents said they have successfully built and maintained a positive employment brand through good communication and quality management practices.

“These results prove that employees are happier and more likely to stay with their companies due to the quality of their management.” Companies that develop the skills of their leaders boost employee morale, which then positively contributes to the company’s overall employment brand,” Burton M Goldfield who is the president and CEO of TriNet said. He noted that attention should be paid benefits and payroll as they are important foundations for a thriving company culture.

The survey also found that hiring was on a slight upswing over the past three months with more than 60% of respondents saying they are currently hiring or trying to attract talent. In the first quarter, only 55% of the respondents were planning to hire.
