Files and mics fly as East Delhi civic body meet is shifted to tent house
The general body meeting of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation lasted just 15 minutes. Miffed by East Delhi Mayor Annapurna Mishra’s “last-minute” decision to shift the venue of the general body meeting to a tent, Opposition councillors disrupted the meeting by raising slogans, snatching mics and throwing files.
Opposition leaders told Municipal Commissioner Sajjan Singh Yadav to call off the meeting. They surrounded Yadav in a bid to stop him from attending the meet.
“This is abuse of power by the Mayor. She did not inform Opposition leaders about the change of venue. At the scheduled hour, all Opposition councillors and the Municipal Commissioner were waiting at the meeting hall. Even BJP councillor Jitender Singh Shunty was waiting with us. Half an hour later, the Mayor sent a letter stating that the meeting will take place in a tent,” Leader of Opposition Varyam Kaur said.
As soon as the Mayor’s letter reached the hall, Opposition leaders started protesting against the decision.
“The meeting should not be held in a tent. They say that this does not have the facilities needed to hold a general body meeting. But how is that tent better than the meeting hall? What is the BJP trying to prove?” Congress councillor Savita Sharma said.
The meeting had begun even before the Commissioner and the other administrative staff could reach the tent house. “We were forced to hold the meeting in the tent as the meeting hall does not have enough facilities. But the Opposition behaved in an uncivilised manner. They climbed
