FDI in wholesale is best, beneficial to farmers and traders, says Sukhbir

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on Monday said that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in wholesale was the “best form” and was beneficial to “both farmers and traders.” He also stated that the Congress-led UPA government was running away from a vote in Parliament on the crucial issue of FDI in the retail sector as it fears that even its allies wont support it on the issue.

Addressing the media after visiting a METRO Cash and Carry India wholesale distribution centre at Amritsar, which is scheduled to open on November 28, Sukhbir said: “NDA and all opposition parties have been demanding a vote under section 184 on this crucial issue impacting our economy but the UPA government wanted to rush through the decision while ignoring the Parliament.”

The deputy chief minister, accompanied by Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, added that the Shiromani Akali Dal as well as NDA was a of the firm view that on the issue of FDI in retail, all stake holders, retailers, farmers, political parties and traders, should have been taken into loop by the UPA government.

He further said that the Shiromani Akali Dal had supported FDI in wholesale as it felt that it would be beneficial to the retailers, farmers and traders removing the middlemen from the cycle but in the case of FDI in retail there was a question mark as crores of retailers are dependent on their neighbourhood shops.
