Expressway till Gurgaon to come under CCTV surveillance
Two days after a 23-year-old woman was raped in a moving bus and dumped near the Mahipalpur flyover on NH-8, the Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL), the concessionaire of the expressway, has decided to bring the entire stretch under camera surveillance.
This will be central to plans for stepped-up security on the expressway.
Currently, there are 32 CCTV cameras near the Sirhaul toll plaza and staff have been instructed to be on the lookout for vehicles with tinted glasses and/or curtains.
This comes after the National Highways Authority of India instructed the concessionaire to install CCTV cameras all along the expressway.
“We have been asked to install such cameras at various points along the expressway. We are aware of the gravity of the situation and that is why such steps have been initiated,” a DGSCL spokesperson said.
The gangrape had taken place near Mahipalpur, which is almost on the expressway.
While the Gurgaon police has held meetings with transporters to ensure that vehicles with tinted glass are impounded and verification of drivers is done properly, the DGSCL has put their staff on high alert to apprehend any suspicious-looking vehicle.
According to a DGSCL official, staff on the stretch from IGI airport to Kherki Dhaula toll plaza have been instructed to double the number of patrols.
The concessionaire has two patrol cars and six two-wheelers regularly patrolling the stretch.
