On the day Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav visited riot-affected areas of Muzaffarnagar district, the Uttar Pradesh government Sunday suspended IPS officer Subhash Chandra Dubey, who was the police chief of the district when the riots broke out.

Kamal Saksena, Secretary (Home), said Dubey had been suspended for “failing to control the riots in time”. He said the government has ordered a departmental inquiry against Dubey.

Dubey was the SSP of Muzaffarnagar from August 28 to September 9. He was transferred on September 9 and attached to the DGP headquarters.

A one-member judicial commission, comprising retired Allahabad High Court judge Vishnu Sahai, has taken up the inquiry into the communal clashes. Saksena said Sahai had sent a letter to the government stating that he had accepted the probe. He said the commission is expected to give its report in two months’ time.

IG (Law and Order) R K Vishwakarma said no incidents were reported from Muzaffarnagar on Sunday, the second day when curfew was relaxed during day time. The curfew is in force in City Kotwali, Civil Lines and Nai Mandi police station areas.

He said as many as 188 persons have been arrested in connection with the 66 cases lodged for various incidents of violence in Muzaffarnagar, besides the preventive arrests.

Vishwakarma said extra police force will be deployed in Muzaffarnagar for the security during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit there on Monday. Two IGs, five DIGs, 14 Additional SPs, 20 deputy SPs, 157 Sub-Inspectors, 580 constables and 14 traffic Sub-Inspectors will be deployed for the PM’s visit.
