The legal noose around Maninder Singh aka Sunny Johar, the controversial owner of the The Hub, a bar-cum-restaurant in Ghumar mandi of Ludhiana where a senior police official was assaulted late on Tuesday, seems to be tightening.

The excise raid at the restaurant has revealed a huge discrepancy in the physical stock and the one mentioned in the stock register. Though, it possesses a liquor license, it was found that The Hub had more than double the stock it is authorised to keep. Sources said a large quantity of imported liquor was also found and most of it had been procured without paying duty.

Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC) Kamalpreet Brar confirmed unearthing the hidden stock. “We found a hidden stock of liquor. The anomalies are huge,” he said.

The department will be registering a case under the Excise Act against the bar owners, Brar added.

It needs to be mentioned that the restaurant used to host late parties, which used to go on till the wee hours while as per rules, no eating joint in the city can operate past midnight.

Also, it has come to fore that the restaurant did not not have any parking facility. Interestingly, the municipal authorities have till date failed to take any action.

The Hub violates building norms

Sources in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation also said that the The Hub has violated building by-laws.

A reliable source in the civic body, on the condition of anonymity, said, “As per the laws, a commercial building is not allowed to have the main entrance from side. But The Hub has its entry from right side of the building, which is in violation of norms.”

The compulsory construction challan, which has to be deposited while getting the maps passed and before the actual construction work begins was “deposited a year after the construction.”

“The payment of Rs 20 lakh, for the building registered in the name of Maninder Pal Singh, was received in 2011 after a delay of one year,” the source said, adding, “Political pressure was the reason why no action was taken against the restaurant till now.”

Contacted, MC Commissioner, R K Verma, said, “I am not aware about the violations by the restaurant and will get checked immediately. Action will be taken.”

The manager of the restaurant was not available for the comments.
