Senior Indian Information Service officers will have an interesting job early next year—scrutinising the media to see how rival political parties engage the fourth estate during the national elections. As Awareness Observers or watchdog of the watchdogs, they will hunt for possible instances of ‘paid news’ attempted by different political parties and report to the Election Commission. For the first time, there would be three types of observers during the national polls—General Observers, Expenditure Observers and Awareness Observers. The government has already decided to postpone the customary year-end Economic Editors’ Conference to next year so as not to rub the poll regulator the wrong way.
