The deputy jailor of Varanasi district jail was shot by motorcycle-borne youths in Cantonment police station area of the district Saturday morning. The official sustained six bullet injuries and died on the spot.

Anil Tyagi (39) was attacked while he was parking his car opposite a gymnasium that he visited regularly. The police have recovered six empty shells of .9 mm cartridges from the spot.

The police did not rule out that the motive behind the murder to be Tyagiís strictness towards undertrials lodged in the jail. The police officials were present in jail till late evening and were questioning inmates.

Inspector General, Varanasi Zone, G L Meena said they have spoken to the victimís wife but she could not throw light on the motive behind her husbandís murder.

Tyagi is survived by his wife Anubha and two children ó Ram (9) and Shiv (5).

The IG added that Tyagi had never informed about any threat to his life to the police or his colleagues. Tyagi was not carrying his service weapon with him when he was attacked, he confirmed.

A native of Meerut, Tyagi was a regular visitor to Virus gymnasium located next to Deen Dayal Hospital, some two-kilometre away from his official residence on the jail campus.

Deputy Inspector General, Varanasi Range, A Satish Ganesh said Tyagi was not going to gym for the last three days as he was out of station. He returned to Varanasi Friday .

According to the police, around 8.35 am Saturday, Anil reached the gym in his private car. He was parking the vehicle in front of the gym when two youths already present there fired at him from close range. The assailants escaped with their two associates who were waiting on two separate motorcycles a few yards away.

Hearing the gunshots, locals gathered at the spot and informed the police.

A police official, who was present nearby, rushed Tyagi to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

DIG, Jail, Varanasi, VK Jain said Tyagi had joined Varanasi district jail in July, 2007. He was transferred to Firozabad district jail about four months ago but was yet to be relieved from Varanasi jail, confirmed a jail official.

Lucknow jail superintendent R K Tiwari was shot dead in a similar manner in 1998 while Meerut jailís deputy jailor Narendra Dwivedi was killed in 2007.
