A TMC group clash in Durgapur sparked off violence on Monday.

In the morning, at Kottadih in Pandobeshwar, Durgapur, a meeting was fixed to discuss the compensation of a colliery worker who was hurt recently in the mines. At the meeting, two TMC leaders – Siddartha Rana and Uttam Mondal – got into a heated argument and gunshots were exchanged among supporters of both sides. The two groups also hurled bombs at each. While Rana is the assistant president of the local TMC, Mondal is the INTTUC leader.

Mondal and one Rambali Chauhan were hurt and admitted to ECL Kalla Hospital. A huge police force from Pandobeshwar and adjoining areas was deployed to bring the situation under control. Several spent bullets and crude bombs were recovered from the spot. The whole area was gripped in tension with shops closed till late evening.

ACP (east) Silvan Murugan, however, refrained from confirming the names of Mondal or Rana involved in the clash. Talking to The Indian Express, he said, “The incident is under investigation and nothing can be said about the offenders involved, now.”
