Chennai, July 26: The Tamil Nadu goverment will shortly release a draft e-governance policy and strategy for the effective implementation of the e-governance projects in the state.

According to a policy note released by State minister for law, information technology and electricity D Jayakumar on Monday, the proposed e-governance strategy and policy would cover major aspects like "standardisation, security, funds resources, PR promotion, MIS and decision support system".

Further, the IT department of the Tamil Nadu government has proposed to set up a directorate of e-governance. This is being done to augment the e-governance initiatives and projects of the Tamil Nadu government. As a first step, the e-governance cell at ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu) in the name of Tamil Nadu e-governance mission has been formed which will later become a part of the directorate. The task of drafting the e-governance policy has been entrusted to the e-governance mission.

The state government will also shortly release a new ITES (information technology enabled services) policy. According to the policy note, steps have been initiated to position Chennai as the world capital of banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and the health and transportation segments of ITES.

The policy note further states that Tamil Nadu has become an attractive destination for IT companies. "The three IT majors, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro have acquired large tracts of lands in and around Chennai. The huge demand has led to the growth of IT infrastructure and the development of more than 1.4 million sq feet IT space in the last four months is testimony to that," it said.

In 2004, the government is confident of creating another 2.5 million sq feet of space in both the private and the public sector to meet the growing requirements of national and international clients. On the whole, the first phase of the Knowledge Industrial Township is being planned through a special purpose vehicle in Sholinganallur along the IT corridor.

In Coimbatore, ELCOT has identified lands in the campus of Coimbatore Medical College to put up an IT park of 250,000 sq.ft., space. The work would be carried out by ELCOT Infrastructure Ltd.
