Dog from Oz stuck at IGI for over a month

A dog, which was brought here from Australia by an international flight, has been stranded at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport since November 1 because proper procedures were not adopted while importing it.

According to an official release from DIAL, the government agencies refused to clear the release of the dog after ascertaining that Malaysian Airlines did not adhere to the proper procedure required to export live animals into India. The Animal Quarantine & Certification Services (AQCS) has also sent out a strict warning to the errant airline, stating: “It is requested that strict direction may be given to the airline to refrain from lifting any livestock without knowing the import health guidelines of the country.”

According to the DIAL release, the consignee refused to take delivery of the dog and formally abandoned the dog by writing a letter addressed to Customs on November 22. The dog will soon be handed over to Maneka Gandhi, who had contacted DIAL on the issue on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
