After the rollback of the FYUP, Delhi University on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that it was changing its stand on the implementation of the reservation policy for appointment of assistant professors in the university.

During a hearing before the court of Justice B D Ahmad and Justice Siddharth Mridul, the counsel for the university stated that following a letter sent by the UGC on July 1, the university was withdrawing its earlier affidavit, in which it had claimed that it was an “autonomous body”, which was “not obliged” to follow the UGC and Central governmnet decisions with regard to the appointment of teachers.

The DoPT in 1997 had notified a roster-based reservation policy for SC/ST/OBC teachers, under which the reservation was to be given on the basis of the total vacancies available in the university. However, DU Executive Council had taken a decision to implement the reservation for vacancies arising in the particular university department, which had significantly reduced the number of seats available for the reserved categories. The UGC and the Central government had sent various reminders to the university to follow the Central system, which had been dismissed by the university earlier.
