Delhi is likely go to polls in the second week of November, after the Election Commission of India (ECI) notifies the Assembly elections in five states by September-end.
Sources in the Delhi government said the elections were likely to be notified on September 28. The date had not been finalised as the ECI was yet to visit Mizoram, one of the five states going to polls - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh being the other four.
Meanwhile, Delhi will be the first state to give the voters a “revolutionary” media to track their polling stations via Google Maps.
In keeping with its theme of “inclusion” for the year 2013, the Delhi Election Commission had undertaken mapping of all 11,594 polling stations in the city. After the rationalisation of polling booths, Delhi now has 11,763 polling stations, and the coordinates have been shared with Google.
A senior official said the requirement was set by the ECI, and Delhi was the only city that will be able to offer the service of tracking polling stations on Google Maps. The other states, officials said, have not been able to map the polling stations and get the coordinates right.
Chief Election Officer Vijay Dev said the move aims to help in facilitating a better turnout on poll day.
According to the final summary revision of Delhi’s electoral roll, published on September 9, the total number of voters has climbed to 1.15 crore from 1.07 crore during the 2008 Assembly elections.
Of the 1.15-crore electorate, 64 lakh are women and 51 lakh men. Young voters make up 3.04 per cent of the electorate.
Voting will take place in 11,763 polling booths spread across 2,603 locations in Delhi. In all, 634 locations have been identified as “critical” — areas where the Election Commission feels voters are vulnerable to intimidation.
