In the wake of the Delhi gangrape incident which sparked a nationwide outcry, NASSCOM President Som Mittal today said IT companies cannot assume government's role in ensuring safety for women, but would take steps to encourage them to work and feel secure.

"We are not going to take over the government's role in ensuring their safety. Within our industry we will encourage women to come and work and feel secure. We have been inviting parents to visit our facilities," he told reporters here.

Denying that women now prefer working in IT companies in Bangalore and Pune rather than Delhi,he said there are a large number of companies in the North and incidents like the Delhi gangrape cannot deter them from promoting the fundamentals of women's right to work.

Mittal said IT companies are reviewing the guidelines of providing safety to women staff.

"We constantly need to be moving on. We are sharing our best practices across and ensuring that the best practices we have are implemented in both letter and spirit," he added.
