Lionel Messi most definitely is the world's best footballer.

He will for many fans of football become the best ever, eclipsing Pele and Diego Maradona, if he wins the World Cup with Argentina next year.

But Messi shouldn't have picked up an unprecedented fourth consecutive world Player of the Year award at a glitzy FIFA gala yesterday night.

The trophy that Barcelona's record-setting goal scorer bashfully lifted should instead have gone to Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi's downcast rival at Real Madrid.

The award's electorate – journalists and the coaches and captains of national teams – should have tamed their Messi addiction this time.

Not because Ronaldo is a better footballer than Messi. He isn't. But because he stole away one of Messi's most important crowns in 2012.

Winning the Spanish league title was a mammoth achievement, precisely because the towering obstacles Ronaldo and his Madrid teammates overcame to do that were Messi and Barcelona, arguably the greatest player and the greatest club team, respectively, that football has ever seen.

With a squad that cost many tens of millions of euros (dollars), Madrid isn't a mere David to Barcelona's Goliath.

It is a football colossus in its own right, the sport's highest-earning club, with always sky-high ambitions and resources that enable it to challenge for trophies year after

year.

Nevertheless, it was a giant-killing feat to dethrone a Barcelona team with the most fearsome threesome ever fielded by a football club – Messi and midfielders Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.

That is why Ronaldo should have been awarded the

Winning a title is a team's effort. If you feel that Ronaldo is one step ahead by winning La Liga; well look around you have missed out an important point by giving this as an yardstick: and by all likelihood Torres is ahead of Ronaldo by winning Euro Cup, Champions League and FA Cup. Messi stands apart because he is the best!

If you read the article again you will notice that the author based his opinion on the level of Ronaldo's impact and contribution towards his team's success. Ronaldo played a huge part in winning the league and Supercopa. He helped over-throw the Barcelona team that is considered as the greatest of all time. Torres's contributions were not as consistent and influential towards his team's achievements. Not only did Ronaldo inspire his team, he also produced great individual stats. Do you mean the 'UEFA Super Cup' instead of the Euro Cup? Chelsea were runner's up in the UEFA Super Cup...

No he means the Euro Cup as in Euro2012 which Torres won with Spain as topscorer and scored in the Final.

Thanks for clarifying. Even then Torres wasn't the constant game changer like Ronaldo was for Real. Torres finished joint top scorer along with Gomez, Ronaldo and a bunch of others. Anyway, point is there were many other players who had better seasons than Torres in terms of personal contribution to the team and personal performance.

agree to a certain extent.

Cristiano Ronaldo deserved Ballan D'or because he led Real Madrid to win last years La liga....messi has iniesta and xavi and david villa to assist him....But Cristiano only had ozil...no offence to gonazalo higuian but they cudnt hav matched upto the trio of messi-xavi-villa....so it was more of team effort for Barcelona...while cristiano single handedly lead to Real's win....
