Bangalore is where Yahoo! has its second largest R&D centre globally. Yahoo! was early to realise India’s potential to emerge as an epicentre of high-end R&D delivering strong internet products. “We were one of the first to set up a full-fledged R&D centre in Bangalore in 2002,” says Shouvick Mukherjee, VP & CEO, Yahoo!

India R & D. Since then, Yahoo! has made significant investments both in terms of technology and talent.

Over the years, the centre has transformed itself from being an inward looking R&D centre to a customer centric innovation hub. “We have achieved this by building a strong innovation ecosystem that is inclusive, bottom up, self-sustaining and external collaboration. The centre has undertaken end-to-end development of more than 20 products providing best-in-class consumer experiences and online advertising products for both developed and emerging markets,” says Mukherjee. The centre engages in end-to-end product development from concept through launch. The research arm, called Yahoo! Labs, focuses on basic and applied research in the areas of next-generation search, advertising and large-scale computing systems.

India R&D has yielded a 50% average Y-o-Y increase in idea submissions for patent consideration. Some of its well-known products innovations are Yahoo! Cricket, OMG, Vertex, NGD Marketplace. More than 2,000 talented professionals in Bangalore deliver products and services for global markets that directly make a difference to its 700 million unique visitors worldwide, reaching almost half of the global internet population.
