Couple charred to death, leave 4-yr-old son behind

A couple was charred to death Saturday morning at their residence in Sector 46, Chandigarh. Identified as 40-year old Sanjay and his wife, 35-year old Sushma the duo after being shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, were declared brought dead.

According to police the kitchen of the accomodation in which the couple was living was caught in flames and neighbours alerted the police early this morning. Police reached the spot after the fire tenders had doused the flames. However no suicide note has been recovered.

Police said that Sanjay was working as a cook in Indian Air Force and used to come home drunk. This had triggered the quarrel between the husband-wife duo earlier. Neighbours informed the police that the couple was quarrelling throughout the night of incident.

Both were residents of Ambala Cantonment and after their marriage in November 2005 they had come to the city in 2007 and were living here since then. According to police, the four-and-half year son of the deceased, Aryan, was outside the house when the incident happened.

Following the incident a team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) visited the spot and are investigating the case. According to the police, the wife had dragged her husband home in a drunken state on Friday night. The kitchen was damaged in the incident.
