Four persons were injured in Tardeo on Monday when a jeep being driven by the 16-year-old son of a head constable allegedly hit them. Police have booked the teen for rash and negligent driving.

According to Tardeo police, the accused, who lives with his family in Tardeo police quarters, got into a jeep parked in the building compound around 10.30 am and started the engine. “The jeep belongs to a family friend of the accused, who had come for a visit. The teenager got his hands on the ignition key. Thinking that he would go for a spin, he turned on the ignition. However, the jeep was in gear and jumped forward, knocking down two vegetable vendors and two customers,” said an officer. The jeep, however, came to a stop immediately. Eyewitnesses immediately rushed to help the four victims, who were taken to Nair hospital. The accused, meanwhile, made no attempt to flee, police said.

“The jeep also had a puncture, which made it veer out of control. We have registered a complaint against the accused, charging him for endangering life and personal safety under the Indian Penal Code and for driving without a license under the Motor Vehicles Act,” said inspector Manohar Hindalekar.
