SummarySay no work defect on roads, report portrays wrong picture

Contractors, who were named in the report issued by the Engineers India Limited (EIL) for poor condition of city roads, have raised doubts over the consultant company that carried out the study on the request of the civic administration.

EIL had conducted a survey of roads that were constructed or resurfaced in the last three years. The report had pointed out potholes on 11 roads and the list of contractors that carried out the work.

In a letter to the additional city engineer, Chandan Mathrani of Mohanlal Mathrani Construction requested the civic administration to take necessary action against EIL for naming their firm in the report and tarnishing their reputation in the market.

“It can be seen that no defect has been developed where we carried out work. Also, our team visited the site on Friday and noticed that roads were intact and no potholes were developed, as reported by EIL,” he said, adding that the firm had carried out work on a number of roads as per the civic administration orders.

The EIL has listed three roads developed by the firm in the list of roads with potholes. Mathrani said EIL spotted potholes near the edge of road that was caused due to cross cut in Aundh area, near hotel Sarja, but inspection showed that roads were in good condition and no problem existed, as was reported by EIL. Work had been done in patches and there were no cross cut at our work stretch, Mathrani said.

“The road in Baner was laid as per the directions of the civic administration. Also, potholes on road in Hadapsar appeared after the PMC dug it for their services and utilities. The work done on all roads was as per the standards specified and quality of materials used was not compromised with,” Mathrani added.

S P Thakar of Thakar Constructions, while objecting to the report, said. “The sample of construction material that EIL collects is quite less compared to the amount of material used in the entire process. Thus, analysis of the sample should not judge the quality of the material used for the entire road,” he
