New Delhi: Business chamber Assocham urged Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to make provisions in the Budget 2010 for the construction of two freight corridors across the country's Eastern and Western flanks, in order boost economic activity and create jobs.
"The Railway Minister should spell out plans to take forward the scheme proposing the construction of 3,289 kilometres rail network through which railways can annually carry 250 million tonnes of freight," Assocham President Sajjan Jindal said in a statement.
In a representation submitted to the Minister, Jindal pointed out that the proposal was being discussed for the last four to five years, but nothing concrete has so far come up.
"The dedicated freight corridors now demand immediate attention of the minister especially at times of meltdown so that works start on it and employment is created and smooth flow of goods and services through these two corridors is ensured," he said.
Plans as to how the Railway Ministry intends to acquire over 10,000 hectares for construction of two freight corridors, one for Delhi to Mumbai and the other from Delhi to Kolkata, should also be revealed, the industry body said.
