It was Congress versus Congress at the municipal corporation building on Tuesday with several leaders of the party and members of NSUI (National Students Union of India) protesting against the Mayor, who is from Congress, and corporation officials for the decision to impound stray cattle and not release it.

The protestors gathered at the building and raised slogans against the Mayor and officials. Among the protestors were Congress leaders Shashi Shanker Tiwari, Devinder Lobana and Kulbir Singh. Some of protestors even got into a heated argument with the Mayor as he entered the building.

The protest was against the corporation’s decision to catch stray cattle and not release it, as was the practice earlier. The protestors alleged the livelihood of the people was being affected due to cattle being impounded.

Stringent measures were adopted to tackle the problem after the death of a city resident due to his two-wheeler hitting stray cattle. Cattle found roaming in the streets is now impounded.

The protestors alleged the cattle was being sold from there. Congress leaders H S Lucky and Devinder Babla met the Mayor and demanded the cattle be

released. Zila Parishad member Manoj Lubana said another protest would be held if the practice was not stopped within 7 days.
