A day after The Indian Express reported that Chhattisgarh state unit of the Congress had offered cash to Raipur-based journalists before the recent elections, the party said it had asked its state media cell head Ramesh Warlyani to resign.
“We have asked him (Warlyani) to resign from the media department. We have heard complaints against him,” AICC general secretary in charge of Chhattisgarh B K Hariprasad said.
The Indian Express had on Saturday reported how, during the campaign as well as in the days before results were declared, the state unit of the Congress had offered cash “gifts” ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 to about 100 journalists based in Raipur saying it was from the “party election fund”.
The operation was handled by the new media cell set up just before elections. Congress spokesperson and AICC secretary in charge of Chhattisgarh, Bhakta Charan Das said he had no knowledge of the report.
“This report has not come to my knowledge. I will anyway inquire into the matter,” Das said.
The Congress recently lost to BJP in a closely fought contest in the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections.
