Mumbai: Maharashtra’s ruling Congress-NCP alliance is set to form its third successive government in the state as it has emerged as the largest political formation in the assembly elections held on October 13.

The Congress-NCP combine is forging ahead and has managed simple majority on its own. They have until now won 144 seats and are leading in one. The Shiv Sena-BJP on the other hand has taken a severe beating and the combined numbers of the seats won just 91 seats, 25 seats short of its tally from 2004.

Affected vastly by the presence of Raj Thackeray-led MNS, the Shiv Sena-BJP combine has managed to bag only 91 seats and leading in one, far behind its 2004 tally of 116 seats. Shiv Sena has won 45 seats, while BJP has bagged 46 seats and was leading in 1 seat.

Raj Thackeray’s MNS has emerged as the surprise package with victories in 13 seats, way beyond the 8-10 seats even party insiders had forecast. The assembly has 288 seats and the halfway mark for a simple majority is 145.

In fact, the MNS opened its account with the victory of two of its nominees: from Vikhroli, Mangesh Sangle defeated NCP’s Pallavi Sanjay Patil, wife of Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Patil and Shiv Sena’s Datta Dalvi; also, MNS nominee Ramesh Wanjale got elected from Khadakvasla.

The other winners are Chief Minister Ashok Chavan (Bhokar), Narayan Rane (Kudal), NCP minister Ajit Pawar (Baramati), Sushilkumar Shinde’s daughter Praniti (Solapur city central), NCP nominee from Kalwan, A T Pawar, Shivendraje Bhosale from Satara and while President Pratibha Patil's son Rajendra Shekhawat defeated Congress rebel Sunil Deshmukh in Amravati.

In Malegaoan Central, Jana Surajya Shakti candidate and cleric of Jama Masjid Mufti Mohammed Ismail got elected. He defeated sitting Congress MLA Shaikh Rashid and JD(S) strongman and former MLA Nihal Ahmed. In Kalwan, NCP leader A T Pawar got elected for the eighth time in a row. He trounced CPM strongman Jiva Pandu Gavit. Gavit’s constituency Surgana had been merged with Kalwan after delimitation, requiring him to shift his base.

It seems all would be HUNKY DORY if only the BJP came to power....everyone will enjoy the best without paying more...the national exchequer will off course be looted by that kind of appeasement. Think a minority of the majority with little or no comprehension of facts express their narrow views here. THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX....BORN LOSERS

37% voters have voted for Congress and NCP combined while the remaining 63% have voted against. And still the combined will form the government. Is it a democracy in the real sense? The people of this country must think about it. The politicians would not bring any change in the system which ensures that a winner would have to get 51% votes as the present system suits them the most as they can retain power by creating a wedge.

» Defective system of Indian democracy and negative victory

Congress-NCP may retain power in Maharashtra. But the real issue of the people of the country shall remain unresolved. It is the victory of price rise, it is the defeat of farmer cause, it is the defeat of poor rural people. Around 50% vote was polled in Maharashtra, and the so-called winning combine has got about 30% vote, which is not real representation of of whole maharashtra. There is no share of 70% people of maharashtra. So, it can not be a real mandate. It is a negative victory of the ruling combine by the means of divide and rule policy. Of course, this is the outcome of defective in the system. The real mandate would be more than 51% votes of total voter of the state. Now, the phenomena of farmer suicide, sky rising price of essential commodities, severe problems of electricity would again continue and the 70% people of Maharashtra have to face the same. This is nothing but Indian system of democracy, where one can be victorious without majority votes of the people.

BJP has connived with SS which has bashed North Indians. It was clearly evident that BJP is anti national, just to get political advantage BJp had joined hands with Taliban like Shivsena.

Those who are not bothered about our country....who are bothered about their own life benefit has won the elections. Mind Maharashtra's most urban area has voted for BJP only.....Only Rural has supported appeaser congress. This is very clear what kind of politics congress is playing....even BJP Election campaign was not so strong because of their internal problems, still they are able to manage that many seats, thats very striking thing to all the those who support CN party.

Hope that congress does not choose Deshmukh as the CM. He has already slept through his last term in office. New CM should be well educated, modern and should have the courage to be honest and well wisher of all the people. He should have the courage to control SS and call spade a spade. Security and planning of the commercial city of India is very important and can't be compromised like last time when the CM was caught sleeping.
