The absence of provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act to modify auto rickshaws has become a road block for the State Transport Authority (STA) to direct auto rickshaws to make certain modifications to ensure safety of school children.

While the idea (to modify auto rickshaws) was welcomed by the STA in a meeting held recently, a look at the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act has deterred the STA from passing the necessary directions. The STA has apprised the Administration officials that the only way out is a direction from the court.

Sources say that the state is likely to give 15 days’ time to these palaces to complete their documents and get them in order, failing which they will not be de-sealed till December.
