The absence of provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act to modify auto rickshaws has become a road block for the State Transport Authority (STA) to direct auto rickshaws to make certain modifications to ensure safety of school children.

While the idea (to modify auto rickshaws) was welcomed by the STA in a meeting held recently, a look at the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act has deterred the STA from passing the necessary directions. The STA has apprised the Administration officials that the only way out is a direction from the court.

Not only are marriage palaces facing sealing, but the Punjab government too is in a fix over de-sealing of over 100 such marriage palaces falling under the jurisdiction of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and Patiala Development Authority (PDA). The Punjab and Haryana High Court has refused to allow de-sealing of the marriage palaces.

However, the state has been directed to consider the claims of these palaces (those that have already been sealed) on priority basis. The difficulty for the Punjab government is that it already has scrutinized the documents of these palaces and none of them have the requisite clearances to run the marriage palaces. Sources say that the state is likely to give 15 days’ time to these palaces to complete their documents and get them in order, failing which they will not be de-sealed till December.
