CM writes to Railways minister for terminal at Punjabi Bagh
At present, West Delhi has Shakurbasti station. According to the proposal, the station in Shakurbasti station would be expanded into a terminal.
In her letter, Dikshit said the terminal can be built on 50 acres lying vacant near Punjabi Bagh underpass. She added that with the construction of a new terminal, the Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations will be less crowded.
Officials said the plan for the converting Shakurbasti station into a terminal station was proposed in 2008. But due to paucity of funds, the proposal could not be implemented.
To convert the station into a terminal, additional platforms and new washing lines would be constructed at the station.
The number of platforms in Shakurbasti station will be increased to five from the existing three.
Post the expansion, at least 16 outstation train would originate and terminate here every day. At present, only EMU trains move at the Shakurbasti station. Also, five washing lines would be instituted after transforming the station into a terminal. This, officials said, would help in maintenance of trains.
“With the expansion, the station would be able to accommodate larger number of trains. This will also benefit the passengers in West Delhi,” said AK Sachan, Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi Division.
