CM begins ‘change’ with dressing down

A day after promising “visible change” within a week’s time in the government, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday warned IAS officers of strong action if they failed to ensure that the benefits of government-run schemes reached the people.

Addressing senior administrative officers’ conference, organised by the state’s IAS Association, Akhilesh Yadav reportedly said that he was not like those former CMs who addressed officers as tu (you). He gave respect to officers, but he did not like sycophancy and could punish them if necessary.

The chief minister said that the prestige of IAS officers in UP has fallen in recent years. “IAS officers of UP cadre had been selected in large number for the Centre’s deputation in the past and they served on important positions there. Now selection of officers from UP has decreased,” Akhilesh said.

Stating that the people had voted him to power believing in his electoral promises, he said, “Now it is the responsibility of officers to execute the promises effectively and in a fair manner.” The government would take action against the officers who would show negligence in executing government schemes, he said.

Akhilesh asked officers to be sensitive about redressal of public grievances. He also said that maintaining law and order was essential for development of the state and that is the priority of the government.
